Abstract Summary The best sequence for the delineation of IX to XIIth cranial nerves in their cisternal course and their differentiation in 3 dimensional T2 weighted CISS. The glossopharyngeal (IX) and vagus (X) nerves in most cases are excellently or well visible at their origin, in the permedullary cistern and in the jagular foramen. In the 3 dimensional T1w MP-RAGE (Magnetization prepared rapid acquired gradient echoes) sequence, the IXth and Xth cranial nerves are only barely visible or not visible at all. In the 2-dimensional T2w TSE sequence, these 2 nerves are often only sufficiently visible or barely visible in their intracranial course. They are missed in several cases. In most cases, the spinal accessory XI and hypoglossal XII nerves are well or adequately visible in 3 diamensional CISS images, with the exception of the spinal roots of the XIth cranial nerve, which are only barely visible. In the 2-dimensional TSE sequence, these 2 nerves were judged as generally non visible with the exception of the medullary parts of the spinal accessorynerve, which are barely visible. In the 3-dimensional MP-RAGE technique, there is a poor visualization of the XIth and XIIth cranial nerves. |
