Abstract

The aims of this work are: br 1- To detect the prevalence of anxiety disorders in the community. br 2- To know the distribution of these disorders in the community as regards sociodemographic factors. br 3- To find out how these disorders manifest and there degree of severity in the community. br 4- To assess the Co morbidities of anxiety disorders. br 5- To attempt to estimate the degree of disability resulting from this group of disorders and the help seeking behavior related to them. br 6- To compare the results of this study with findings reported from other studies conducted in different cultures. br Conclusions of this study are: br -) Anxiety disorders are widely prevalent in the community. br -) The most prevalent condition was specific phobia. br -) Panic disorder without agoraphobia was found to be the second prevalent anxiety disorder in our sample and associated with multiple doctor visits. br -) Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) was the third common anxiety disorder in the sample and was associated with impairment in the quality of life similar to that of panic disorder without agoraphobia. br -) Social phobia was the fourth most common anxiety disorder and was most prevalent in single unoccupied individuals. br -) Other anxiety disorders including Posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder with agoraphobia, and agoraphobia without history of panic were relatively rare. However, individuals with these disorders were associated with higher impairment in the quality of life than individuals with GAD or panic disorder without agoraphobia.
