Abstract In our study we aim to evaluate the short term outcome of treatment of iliac artery stenosis versus occlusion through balloon angioplasty with or without stinting. The evaluation includes: technical success, primary patency rate at one year, operative time, route of intervention and complications. We found in this study that the success rate for the stenosis group was 100% and in the occlusion group it was 87.23%, primary patency rate at one year duration was 92.8% and 85.7% for both groups respectively and we found marked improvement in signs and symptoms of both groups. The complications which occurred in both groups were mild in severity, treated without disability or limb loss and included intimal dissection, blood loss during the procedure, distal embolization, puncture site hematoma and infection with no major complications as myocardial infarction, cerebro vascular stroke, renal failure or rupture of arterial wall. We conclude that PTA with or without stent placement is an effective, safe, rapid procedure for treatment of both iliac artery stenosis and occlusion, but the most important factor for success is the adequate selection of the patients who will be subjected to this procedure and always keeping in mind the patient need to continue walking and thus maintain his/ her quality of life. |
