Abstract

Aim of the work:
1- Estimation of plasma Thrombopoietin level in septicemic neonates whether in preterm or full term.
2- Estimation of plasma Erythropoietin level in septicemic neonates whether in preterm or full term.
3- Estimation of the effect of therapeutic use of recombinant human Erythropoietin in improving the haematological picture in septicemic neonates.
4- Comparison between the use of anti microbial therapy alone and with recombinant Epo in the treatment of neonatal sepsis.
For the study we conclude that:
Tpo and Epo serum levels are increased in neonates with sepsis and the degree of increasing correlates with the intensity of the disease but Tpo returns to normal levels after improvement while Epo is not returning to normal levels as the increasing in Epo levels during neonatal septicaemia may be a multi factorial process rather than affecting the haemostatic mechanisms only.
Septicemic neonates who received combined classic therapy and rhuEpo (no=60) showed better outcome (81.7% improvement). While septicaemic neonates who received classic therapy only (no=60) showed lower rate of improvement (70%). These results show that the use of rhuEpo in management of septicaemic cases should improve the outcome of septicaemic patients and decrease the mortality percent.
