Abstract

Our study aimed to clarify the effect of diabetes mellitus of the myocardium of infants of diabetic mother using myocardial markers (Creatine Kinase-MB and cardiac Troponin-I) as well as echocardiographic changes.
Conclusions and recommendations:
Diabetes mellitus only has very minimal effect on the myocardium, while as infants of diabetic mother who exposed to perinatal asphyxia were liable for strong injurious effect on the myocardium.
Troponin-I level should be measured in all infants of diabetic mother especially those with signs of perinatal asphyxia, respiratory distress or critically ill infant.
High Troponin-I level may be considered as an indicator of impaired both systolic and diastolic functions in infants of diabetic mother even before significant echocardiographic changes.
Acidosis of the blood is the strongest triggering factor for release of cardiac Troponin-I from the myocardium.
Echocardiography is essential for all infants of diabetic mother for exclusion of congenital heart disease which may be discovered accidentally.
