Abstract Aim of the work To estimate the maternal and neonatal plasma carnitine level in preterm infants with RDS. Conclusion After statistical analysis of the results this study revealed: In our comparative study of clinical data, we found no statistically significant between their weights, gestational ages, sex and mode of delivery in infants with respiratory distress syndrome and infants without respiratory distress syndrome. In our statistical study of laboratory data, we found a highly significant difference, (P=001) between the plasma level of cacarnitine in preterm infants with RDS (group I) and preterm infants without RDS (group III). The level of carnitine is decreased in the group suffering from RDS (group I) in comparison to the plasma free carnitine has no statistically significant difference between preterm infants with RDS group (group II) and preterm infants without RDS group (group IV). The antenatal corticosteroid therapy has no effect on the level of plasma free carnitine and has no statistically significant difference in preterm infants with RDS group (group I) and preterm infants without RDS group (group III). In our correlation study among the group I and group III, we found a negative significant correlation between gestation age and birth weight with plasma free carnitine. It was concluded that low plasma-free carnitine levels in preterm infants with RDS in this study may be due to its impaired maternal-fetal transfer or its increased but ineffective utilization during surfactant synthesis in immature lung tissue. |
