Abstract

Aim of the work
To review what is updated about severe acute respiratory syndrome in children.
Summary
Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a respiratory illness that has recently been reported in many areas of the world.
The primary way that SARS appears to spread is by close person to person contact. Most cases of SARS have involved people who cared for or lived with someone with SARS, or had direct contact with infectious material from a person who has SARS.
In general. SARS begins with a fever greater than 38.0oc. Other symtoms may include headache, an overall feeling of discomfort and body aches. Some may experience mild respiratory symptoms. After 2 to 7 days, SARS patients may develop a dry cough and have trouble breathing. The clinical picture in children is the same as in adults and may be milder than adults.
SARS is diagnosed by:
1- History, clinical examination, radiological and laboratory findings.
Antimicrobial and antiviral as Ribavirin and human interferon can treat SARS.
For prevention of SARS: case detection, prompt isolation and identification of all close contacts of each case and assurance of their follow up are necessary.
Quarantine and protective wears as head cover, goggles, gowns gloves and usage of disinfectants are also important in limitation of SARS.
