Abstract Aim of the work To assess the haemostatic status of children with protein energy malnutrition and its relation to the clinical manifestations as well as to the severity of the disease. Conclusions We can conclude that the haemostatic status of the child with protein energy malnutrition is compromised. However, absence of clinical evidence of bleeding does not rule out coagulation disorders in such child. Reduction in prothrombin concentration was the most constant finding in our study; 25 cases had prothrombin concentration less than 70% and 8 cases had prothrombin concentration below 50%. Thrombocytopenia was present in 2 cases, but not below the critical level causing bleeding. Bleeding time and coagulation time were normal. A peculiar feature was the presence of marked thrombothytosis (platelet count >600.000/cmm) in 13 cases, which could be attributed to anaemia and to hidden and apparent infections. |
