Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the domestic wastewater treatment by
the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process. Two different types of reactors
have been used. The experiment involves operation of two-pilot-scale UASB reactors in
parallel treating raw domestic wastewater from the city of Murfreesboro, Tennessee
(USA).The reference reactor was named ”(R)”, and the reactor including distribution,
media and baffles was named ”(B)”.
The research focuses, in phase1, on the effectiveness of distribution of influent
wastewater in the bottom of the UASB reactor (B), and adding baffles to deflect gas to
. the gas-cap opening. In phase 2, the research focuses in increasing the depth of media
on the top part ofUASB reactor (B) from 3.8 cm to 38 cm. Also the research makes a
comparison between reactor (R) and reactor (B) in both phases for efficiency of
wastewater treatment.
The parameters used are divided into the control parameters which have
hydraulic retention time (HRT), organic loading rate (OLR), and temperature (T), and
the main operational parameters, including influent and effluent chemical oxygen
demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand concentrations (BOD), which have
sludge retention time (SRT), pH, total suspended solid (TSS), and volatile suspended
solid (VSS). These parameters affect the UASB loading potentials and its resulting
performance during acclimationl start up and stabilization for the different phases.
In reactor (B) removal of COD, BOD, TSS, and VSS is about 5-8 % more than
rector (R), in Phase (1). But in Phase (2) the percent removal of COD, BOD, TSS and
VSS had increased by about 8-12 % after reactor (B) modification.
