Abstract Capsella bursa—pastoris (L.) Medik., commonly known as Shepherd’s purse is a cosmopolitan weed, widely distributed in many parts of the wr1d. This weed is reputed among public abroad as a remedy for a variety of diseases in folk medicine. It enjoys a considerable popularity as a uterine stimulant to control uterine haemorrhages, it is also reported to be used in the treatment of kidney complaints, chronic diarrhoea, malaria, menorrhagea, atrophy of the limbsas well as a useful tonic and antiscorbutjc. On the other hand, the plant is suspected of producing poisoning in stock on several occasions. In Egypt, the plant is common and crows wildly in different localities specially in the Nile Delta; it is known locally by the rabic names tKjss el raa’i” or “Mikhlet el ras’i”. In this work, the pharmacognostical study of Capsella bursa-pastorjs (L.) Nedik. grown in Egypt is dealt with; it comprises the following parts : PartI : .Sotanical study of the plant (leaves, stems, flowers and fruits). art II : Chemical study of the plant. |
