Abstract

Aim of the work
To detect VEP changes characteristic of amblyopia and to be able to evaluate the prognosis of amblyopic patients under going occlusion therapy.
Conclusion
The pattern VEP latency was significantly prolonged in amblyopic eyes in comparison to normal eyes of the same patients.
The mean VEP latency was 107.98+ (-) 4.40ms. In amblyopia while the mean VEP latency in normal eyes of the same patients was 95.75+ (-) 5.04ms.
The pattern VEP amplitude was not significantly reduced in amblyopic eyes except in anisometropic group which showed reduced VEP amplitude, which may be due to their large. Number of presentations and this point need further study to differentiate between different types of amblyopia.
Comparing the response to occlusion therapy to the initial VEP latency. It was found the less prolonged latercy and the younger age group the better the response to occlusion therapy.
From the results and discussion of this thesis it is recommended:
Every case of amblyopia should be tested for VEP latency as soon as possible and the less prolonged latency and the younger age the better the prognosis. And it is also recommended to do further studies on the VEP differences in different types of amblyopia and in different age groups.
