Abstract

Aim of the work
Is to outline the corneal complications of soft contact lenses and to point out the clinical presentation and seriousness of theses corneal complications.
Summary
Soft contact lenses are used not only for cosmetic but also for refractive and therapeutic purposes. High Myopia, aphakia and regular astigmatism are important indications for soft contact lens. It has many advantages over spectacle (wide field of vision, lens magnification in aphakia and better binocular vision) unfortunately, not all patients can be successfully fitted since lens associated complications may necessitate discontinuing lens wear. These complications may be a minor annoyance or they may threaten vision. Corneal complications include superficial punctuate epithelial erosions, corneal neuvascularization, superior limbic keratoconjuncitivities, corneal edema, corneal infiltrate and keratitis, corneal ulcer (bacterial, viral, fungal and amoebic) and others. We do not wish to discourage the use of soft contact lenses but to limit its use to indicated cases and given only under extreme restrition and advised only for patients capable of lens care and maintenance.
It is important for the clinician who fits a patient with a contact lens to be a ware of the real risk of corneal complications. His responsibilities include a careful examination and evaluation of the eye before lens fitness, dispensing a properly fit lens, adequate patient instructions in lens technique, appropriate follow up and prompt diagnosis and management of complications. The development of symptoms of pain or redness in a patient with previously comfortable lens should cause the clinician to suspect the presence of corneal complications. The patient must be instructed to seek immediate ophthalmic attention to confirm the presence or absence of these complications and initiate appropriate therapy.
