Abstract Twohmdred ard rifts’ sil sa’mplcs collected from different localities in the vicinity of Alox3ndta were screened for antibiotic-producing actinoniycctes. Out of these samples, 45 isolates of actinoaiycetcs wore obtained. These isolates showed antibiotic activity towards one or more of the test microorganisms; Staph ,aureus, Esch.colj, and C.albicons. However, isolate no. ‘7 inhibited the growth of the 3 tested organisms. Identification of this strain revealed that it belongs to the relatively new genus; Pseudonocardia family Nocardiaeeoc, while the remaining strains either belonged to the gerus Nocardia or the genus Streptotnyces. Isoloto no. 7 possessed the following characterestics: o) the antibiotic produced showed broad spectrum activity against G-rarn-positive and C-ram-negative bacteria as well as yeast. b) Physiological stability, retaining its capacity for antibiotic production during prolonged successive sub- cultures. |
