Abstract An experiment was carried out at Mallawy Experimetal Station of the Animal Production Research Institate, to study the productivity, chemical composition, nutritive value and palatability of elephant grass as well as the effect of feeding different levels of it on the growth of sheep. Fourty-eight lambs aging 4 months and twenty four yearling lambs from the local Ossimi breed were each divided into three similar groups and fed according to morrison’s standard (1959) the animals were randomly assigned to the following three feeding treatments. 1. Co-op 9777501. concentrate mixture 100% + elephant grass 0% + wheat straw(control Tr. ) 2. Co-op. concentrate mixture 50 % + elephant grass 50% + wheat straw 3 . co-op. concentrate mixture 25 % + elephant grass 75% + wheat straw Representative samples were taken from the four cuts of the fodder during its growing season and analyzed for proximate and mineral analysis. Four digestibility trials were conducted to determine the nutritive value of the 4 cuts of the grass. The growth of the animals was measured throughout an experimental period of 132 days. |
