Abstract

Seawater desalination via reverse Osmosis technology depends mainly on the membrane performance. There are few parameters, which are typically used to describe the performance of reverse Osmosis units operation. Product flow rate and salt passage are the key performance parameters. They are mainly influenced by variable parameters such as the applied pressure, temperature, system recovery and feed water salt concentration.
An experimental loop was designed to carry out this study; its components were purchased from the market place. The experimental loop was constructed at the reactor development laboratory, department of Nuclear Reactors, Atomic Energy Authority- Egypt. The synthetic water was prepared by dissolved NaCI in tap water, of similar concentrations as seawater for use in the experiments. The membranes type was
Filmtec (SW30-2540).
Reverse Osmosis system is made up of the following basic components: Feed pretreatment High- pressure pump, Membrane assembly, and permeate post treatment. In this respect it is worthmentioning that specific feed flow rate
(Feed flow rate per each membrane
element) is an effective factor in the performance of R.O system. In fact the high-pressure pump in the experimental loop under consideration is piston type and hence the feed flow rate is constant through out this work. As a result the effect of specific feed flow rate on the system performance was not available for study.
