Abstract There has been growing interest during the last decade in the value of using Arg, the physiologic source of nitric oxide (No), for a wide range of physiological and patho-physiological effects in human and experimental animals. Arg is in volved in a number of important biochemical processes. It plays a role in the metabolism of glucose, amino acids, FAs, and lipids. In addition, it influences the cardiovascular, endocrine, nervous, pulmonary, and imrnune systems and has beneficial effects on hepatic and renal functions. Also, Arg and its product NO, regulate cellular redox status. If the availability of Arg decreases, Cnos switches from a coupled state (generating NO) to an uncoupled state (generating O2). |
