Abstract There’re several cases where piles are exposed to lateral pressure resulting from laterally moving soil and mostly these piles are not designed to with stand lateral pressure this directed the researcher to conduct the present experimental study to investigate the effect of two selected lateral soil movement profiles on single pile and pile and pile group An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of lateral soil movement of clay layer for both triangular and trapezoidal lateral movement profiles on straining actions and pile head deflection of a single pile and pile group in the case of single pile the independent parameters investigated are pile diameter and embedment length. In the case of pile group the lasted. Movements are pile arrangement position spearing and head fixity condition. A soil container was designed to contain both of stable and unstable layers .strain gouges glued on the surface of the piles are used to indicate strains on piles .it was concluded for both single pile and pile group that the bending moment profile along pile length has a parabolic shape with maximum value at interface between stable and un stable layer straining action on piles increase with increase of pile diameters and embedment length for the case of single pile .in the case of piles in arrow maximum bending moment and pile head deflection .the case with the increase of pile spacing the inner pile is more affected. |
