Abstract

The use of textile fibers as reinforcing material has grown steadily in volume and various of applications. With the proper selection of materials and manufacturing technology, composites can be designed to outperform metals in some applications. Applications of composite materials have found expanded use in aerospace, marine and automobile industries during the past few decades due to their good engineering properties such as high specific strength, stiffness, lower density, high fatigue endurance, high damping, low thermal coefficient, etc. As well as composite materials are very attractive for use in civil engineering applications due to their high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, corrosion resistance, light weight and potentially high durability. Such application is of most importance in the renewal of constructed facilities infrastructure such as buildings, bridges, pipelines, etc. The use of fabrics in cement-based composites as reinforcement elements is gaining increase of interest in recent years for various applications such as thin elements, lightweight products, repair, strengthening, and prestressed concrete components. Further more, these are being considered as a replacement to the conventional steel in reinforced concrete structures due to continuing drop in the cost of these materials. The properties of any composite do not only depend on the reinforce¬ment and matrix materials, but also on the geometrical arrangement of the fibers (the fiber architecture) and their interface with the matrix. In the presented work the effect of composite materials structural parameter on their mechanical properties especially fabric cemented composites were studied, the experimental work was divided into two parts, the first part consists of cement composite reinforced by different material types of fabrics. The second part consists of composite cemented fabric with the same fabric material and different structures. In these two parts different sets of specimens were made with different fabric layers after that these specimens were tested on tensile, bending and compression testing machines. From this work it was found that the mechanical properties of the composite materials were influencing by the properties of the reinforcing fabric, its construction and the number of reinforcing layers. It was concluded that the increase of number of fabric layers increase some of the composites properties such as tensile and bending strength and decrease the compressive strength.
