Abstract

In order to overcome a foreseen energy crisis due to the limited oil and gas supplies and reserves, also due to the economic variations in the entire world and of course due to the environmental side effects of fossil fuels, the world is seeking new energy sources that can provide a sustainable, safe and economic mean to replace the currently used fossil fuels and ensure a better and cleaner transportation future. Despite that the marine transportation sector consumes only 5% of global petroleum production; it is responsible of 15% of the world NO and SO, emissions. These figures must be the engine that powers the scientific research worldwide to get new solutions for the very old problem of energy.
The present thesis introduces a comparative study for two candidates of fuels that are expected to fully replace the diesel fuels in the marine sector. These two fuels are the natural gas as a current solution implemented already in many energy fields either in stationary or mobile shapes, and the hydrogen as a future fuel hoped to be the fuel of the future. This comparison takes place inside a marine gas turbine as this type of prime movers gained a very good reputation and success in the marine field over the past few years and it has not been the focus of marine powering researches for many years.
The present thesis is divided into seven chapters and two appendices:
Chapter 1: Introduction
In this chapter, the recent research programs related to the fuels under study are discussed. The current situation of the natural gas as an energy source and the worldwide interest to implement it in various transportation sectors either in internal combustion engines or gas turbines are given in brief. The hydrogen also is presented and the recent studies of using hydrogen as an energy carrier in various power plant types are briefed, the problems discovered from the various studies are highlighted to give a concise overview of the nature of this fuel. A short discussion of the marine power plant developments is also given as well as the current study objectives in the light of the global interest of finding new alternative fuels and innovative power plant solutions.
Chapter 2: Overview of marine power plants In this chapter, the main types of marine power plants are discussed in some details. The history of the development of each type is presented first and the technical aspects are discussed second. Also, the fuel cells as a new type of power plants used in marine sector are briefed to give a complete overview of the past, present and future of the marine power plants developments.Comparison table and charts highlight the main characteristics of each type of the
discussed power plants.
