Abstract

The main objective of the work was to study the influence of soil reaction (pH) and redox potential (Eh) conditions on different Fe and Mn fractions. Because these parameters also influence the solubility, research on the mobility and movement of Fe was undertaken for some Egyptian soils/sediments. Five soil/sediment samples from the surface layer (0-15 cm) were collected from five locations in Egypt i.e. Tall Abo-Hamed and Kafr Meet Abo-Ghaleb (rice soils), El-Abassa and El-Rasswa (fish pond sediments), and El-Manzala (lake sediment). Five experiments were carried out to study: 1- The redox potential characteristics of the five soils/sediments under flooded closed conditions. 2- The effect of flooding and organic matter addition on the transformation of Fe and Mn fractions. 3- The transformation of Fe and Mn fractions under controlled conditions of redox potential (Eh) and pH and upon addition of organic matter. 4- The mobility and movement of Fe as a function of time under two different moisture regimes. The isotope Fe-59 was used to look to its mobility.
