Abstract The protection science plays a great role In protecting power system plants and electrical equipment. The need is necessary, with the advance in today’s world and its high dependability on electricity, to design reliable protective systems which trip the faulty part of power systems and evade tripping the healthy one. This thesis deals with one of the most important protective systems, differential protection, and goes into the main problems, and their reasons, that face the differential protective systems. It reviews the most significant academic or applied solutions. The research presents analysis of the saturation current of the CT’s connected on differential protective systems to extract fundamental’s phase angle of the saturated current. The analysis of the saturation current has been done numerically using computer facilities. Based on this analysis, the research presents, using the phase comparison technique, a developed technique to overcome the CT saturation problem which can be used in various differential protective applications. The new developed technique is applied to bus bar protective systems and the results have concluded that the new approach eliminates the mal-operation of the relay. Finally, the research outlines the results and recommendations for future work |
