Abstract

The humidification-dehumidification process (HO) is an interesting technique adapted for water desalination when the demand is decentralized .This technique presents several advantages such as flexibility in capacity , moderate installation and operating costs , simplicity , possibility of using low temperature energy (geothermal, solar, recovered energy or cogeneration), etc. Although the common methods of desalination such as distillation and reverse osmosis are the subject of many investigations (archived data and principle of function validated), studies of the HO process are limited as the laboratory step or patents. The aim of this project is to presente the principle of functioning and the characteristics of this technique, analyzed and evaluated.
The thesis project is a Oesalination unit which can feed a small home containing 5 persons with sufficient amount of drinkable water. The sea water isn’t preferable because it can’t be heated up to more than 70 cC otherwise formation of scales such as Sulfur & Silica may occurs and makes the heating more difficult which means needing a pretreatment unit.
- HO Process doesn’t need a pretreatment unit. When the sea water is sprayed in the unsaturated air (which enters with ambient conditions and exits fully saturated with water vapor at high temperature due to the temperature of water sprayed in it) the air carries the water without salts and when the air is dehumidified in the DX coil the unsalted water is obtained and collected throughout the Dehumidifier
- A DX Coil Dehumidifier used to cool and dehumidify the air using essential components of Air Conditioning systems (Compressor, Evaporator, Condenser and Capilary Tube). Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to present a comprehensive heat and mass transfer performance analysis of a cooling and dehumidification coil at different operating conditions.
- Chapter one shows an introduction on the different types of Desalination, Types of Heat exchanger classification, Types of Humidifiers, and Dx-Coil dehumidifier components.
Chapter two indicates the governing equations which control the dehumidification process and the resulting data filled in tables and drawed in figures to simplifY the effect of changing some process parameters and dimensional parameter on the total amount of produced water collected from the dehumidifier, a program code using Matlab was done for performing the calculation illustrated in Appendix2.
- Chapter three shows the cost calculation analysis of using a DX coil to produ fresh water.
- Chapter four shows a comparison between different types of dehumidifiers us in such a process.
- Appendix I simplify the solving of the governing equations analytically only fo the first section of the evaporator and the resulting amount of produced water.
- Appendix 3 collected the final results of all data and final manufactured dimensions for the set.
