For the past decades, computer has been used in architecture as a drafting tool, rather than a design aiding tool. During the last years several theorists and practitioners tried to introduce computer in different stages through the design process. This thesis is concerned with the deliberation on the genesis and development of designing from the point of view of the potential use of computers in the design process. It explores the applicability of algorithmic design in a real-world architectural context; through the creation of a generative system for modular housing arrangements by using Stochastic search. This system will be used in early stages in the design process, to produce various arrangements for the modular housing units. To present such a generative system able to assist architects throughout the design process, it was necessary first to define the digital architectural design, and the digital design models presented by several theorists and architects, ending by presenting a more general digital design models framework. This helps to specify where the generative system stands in comparison to the other digital design models, concentrating on its main components, sub-levels and characteristics.
After that, it was essential to introduce Algorithmic design, as rule based generative systems that depends on scripting and Computation ,which involves the digitization of entities or processes that are preconceived, predetermined, and well defined. This was followed by the examination of Algorithmic operations including Boolean operations, cellular Automata, Stochastic search, Hybridization and fractals.
The concepts presented in this thesis have been implemented to produce and create a user interface for Modular Housing Arrangement System (MHAS) a generative design system based on stochastic search to produce various alternatives for Modular housing arrangements. It is a program in which the designer can enter parameters and rules for an arrangement of a modular housing unit, then the MHAS will produce several solutions according to the specified rules. It produces a three dimensional models for the generated arrangements and renders a selected view. Afterwards, the designer can chose the best alternative, so that he can edit and add details to achieve a final design. This resulting generative system is expected to facilitate a design process, generate unexpected solutions for well specified rules, and save time consumption for the architects in the early design process.
