Abstract The purpose of this work was to study the interaction between pectin and a number of commonly used antibiotics and preservatives, and to assess the effect of such interaction, if any, on the bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities of the tested antimicrobial agents. The equilibrium dialysis technique has been used for the detection and evaluation of the interaction between pectin and each of eleven antibiotics and three preservatives belonging to different chemical groups. All the tested anti.. biotjcs were shown to interact with pectin with exception of chioramphenicol and tetracycline. Oxytetra.cycline which is structurally similar to tetracycline, was bound, however, by pectin to some extent. The addition of novobiocin sodium to pectin solution resulted in an immediate precipitation probably, of the free novobiocinic acid and no free antibiotic activity was dialysable. The activities of oleandomycin (weak base) and ampicilliri (amphoteric) were xneasureably reduced by pectin but to an extent markedly less than that observed with the strong basic antibiotics. |
