Abstract

The main purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of hot rolling on
the mechanical properties and microstructures of particulate metal matrix
composites prepared by the liquid stirring technique. Different matrices,
namely, commercial pure Aluminium, Al 6063, Al 6061, A12.8%Si 2%Mg
and Al 4.S%Cu have been used. Different volume fractions and different
. .
particle sizes of silicon carbide and alumina particles were used as
reinforcements. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the rolled
composites are compared to the properties of the as-cast specimens. The
results show that a lower bound of reduction percent is required for
composite strengthening depending on the particulate type and size. In all
cases, the matrix type played a key role in the composite behavior.
Key words:
Metal matrix composites, liquid metal processing of composites, Al alloys,
SiC and Al203 reinforcements, hot rolling, microstructure-mechanical
relationship.
