Pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality due to placental insufficiency.
Brain natriuretic peptide is synthetised mainly in the cardiac ventricles
It is secreted mainly in response to cardiac volume overload , pressure overload and hypoxemia
It helps to reduce the load on the myocardium by increasing salt (natriuesis) and water excretion (diuresis)_ , enhancing capillary permeability , and relaxing the peripheral resistance through vasodilatation , reduction in venous return and vascular volume .
Its levels serve as diagnostic and prognostic indicator
It helps in modifying treatment in many diseases including congestive heart failre and myocardial infarction.
