Abstract
This thesis is concerned with assessing the effectivenAss of the measures which have been developed in responSQ to strong de¬mand for energy saving in sea transportation. There are many fuel saving options open to the shipowner. of Wllich he can choose one or many. depending on the amount of capital available and the ex¬pected return on the investment. The work begins by r”eviewing the world energy situation and its impact on the marine power plant performance. Investigation of the fuel saving options considering ship operation. applicat¬ion in diesel and steam propulsion plant machinery has been pres- ented.
An anticipation of future trends and techniques in the field of energy saving marine power plants has been discussed. Improv¬ement of the existing techniques. as well as. predicting new po¬ssibilities are the future weapons to meet the expected hugely expensive and quality detel”iorated fuel oil needed for ships. Finally. the fuel consumption structure of the ship energy system Jlas been investigated and all components having influence on fuel consumption were identified. Various fuel saving techn¬iques corresponding to each component are assessed from the view¬point that their effectiveness can be measured by the improvement ,”ate of tIle transportation energy performance. that is. the ener¬gy required to transport a unit cargo weight in a unit distance.
