Abstract

Knowledge of the incoming solar r;:i~iation is of fundamental importance for all solar energy research and development programs which* are presently undertaken in
various counteries. However, in the absence of such measurements, it is feasible, to use emperical relations to estimate solar radiation from meteorological data.
The puropose of this study is to predict correlations to estimate solar radiation in Alexandria area, using the available weather (9ata and predict the thermal_ performance of a flat-plate collector.
Recording and processing of solar radiation data for, Alexandria city area is carried out using solar radiation instruments available from the Solar Energy Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Alexandria University, such as Pyranometer with or witout shadow band and Actinometer.
In the analysis of the measured solar radiation and otter meteorological data collected for Alexandria city, a number of relations were tried for estimating the solar radiation. The best fit of our measured data over the period of 3-yr. was obtained using the ratio of the daily sunshine hours. The presented correlation can be used to estimate the instantaneous total solar radiationon for a horizontal surface in terms of the ratio of the daily sunshine hours and the angle of incident. The daily value was obtained by
integrating the instantaneous values over the day within an
