Abstract

A numerical technique based on the simplified mar¬ker and cell (SMAC) method is used for the solution of the transient two-dimensional natural convection in tilted fluid layers. The fluid layer is bounded by two flat isothermal plates at different temperatures and either perfectly conducting or adiabatic boundaries at top and bottom ends of the layer. The conservation equations were solved using the primitive variables (velocity, pressure and temperature)y, Calculations are reported for four aspect ratios of 1, 5, 10 and 20. The Rayleigh number was varied between 103 and 10_ 5 to cover both conduction and laminar boundary layer regimes. Two Prandtl numbers are considered, Pr - 0.72 (air) and Pr = 10. The angle of tilt was varied from 0= 90° (ver¬tical) to 0 = 180° (horizontal) with heating upwards. The flow pattern, velocity and temperature profiles and isothermal line s for the fluid layer are presented in details. Correlation equations, from which Nusselt num¬ber across vertical and inclined fluid layers can be calculated, were developed. The present results are in good agreement’*with numerical and experimental results previously published by other authors.
