Abstract The thesis contains five chapters. CIlapter(I) gives an procedure for obtaining the least critical load for a strut of unif~m cross section with arbitrary conditions by using the method of the Laplace transform. buckling length of a strut under its own weight was given exactly by using Bessel functions • In cha.pter (11), the Rayleigh’ s method for evaluating buckling loads of struts of uniform and variable cross sec¬tion is clearly explained • Chapter (Ill) gives four casesfor buckling of struts of non uniform cross sections and exact solutions were obtained. In chapter (IV) two approximate methods for evaluating buckling loads of struts of variable cross sections were obta¬ined and were applied to different shapes of struts of varia¬ble cross sections • Chapter (V) deals with buckling of struts under varying axial forces by using the method of the calculus of variation in case of struts under the action of varying axial forces lfnearly distributed and the action of varying axial forces parabolically distributed |
