Abstract

Egypt is rather for~unate in available phosphate rock and natural gas The population of Egypt is increasing very rapidly, and the additional population needs improved methods ofagri cul turnl production • Means of increasing agricultural production may be divided into extending the Egyptian 1ands and increasing agricultural efficiency and crop yields. It is already impossible to increase production solely by an enlargment of the ~gyptian lands. The only means, therefore,of increasing production is through increased efficiencJ7 and use of fertilizers. Only small proportion of the total. quantity of phospha.te rock mined in Egypt is converted into fertilizers. The present day trend in fertilizers’is towards high concentration compound materials, and p!1osphoric acid is an increasingly important intermediate • Compound fertilizer~ based on phosphoric acid replace the lower anBlys1s products, and also concentrated fer- tilizers based on phosphoric ~cid have great importance in ma.nufacturi.ng and transportion me thods and to use phosphate in the form of multinutrient fertilizer. 2 Urea phosphate is an efficient source of compound fer- tili zer, ni tro gen and phosphate • It is water soluble , and in assessing its potential as a fertilizer it should be compared with materials such as ammonium phosphates • It is crystalline and of constant compositiontreadi2y prepared from two of the current products of fertilizer industry, urea and phosphoric acid • The object of this thesis is to make a study on the poss:ibility of production of urea phosphate ,using phosphoric acid solutions with urea. The theoretical part of the thesis begins with a review on the production of phosphoric acid by wet process and especia using hydrochloric acid for acidulation of phosphate Then, a study on the fundamentals of liquid or liquid process. The aspects of application of packed tower fundamentals are concerned • lhe second catagory in theoretical pnrt deals with a iterature review on methods of production o~ urea phosphate impor-cance as a new hi ghly concen tra ted compound fer- material. 3 he experimental part can be divided in two catagories, first concerning with the application of solvent extraction technique using packed column as a continuous contactor for phosphoric acid-water and n-butyl alcohol system • The second catagory deals with factors affedting production of urea phos¬phate An extraction unit with packed column was designed accor¬ding to the aspects of solvent extraction and packed column characteristics • This work is an advanced stage for application of solvent extraction technique for producing phosphoric acid obtained from treatment of phosphate rock with hydrochloric acid. Equilibrium data were obtained experimentally using seperating funnels • The present study applys on pure phosphoric acid solu¬tions as a preliminary guide to establish the possibility of pplication of tne process operation on a continuous scale using phosphoric acid concentr~tions with different volume acid solution to n-butyl alcohol • The study also design characteristics such as number of stages and ight equivlant to theoretical stage • The second catagory deals with a study of different ctors affecting the conversion of urea to urea phosphate such
