Abstract
This thesis is intended to analyse the inter¬action between the elements of the inland water trans¬port system with an emphasis on the interaction between the ship and the waterway.
The flow phenomena around a moving ship in a confined waterway are discussed. At first, the flow phenomena around a ship moving in deep-open-water is illustrated, then the effect of limited water depth
is taken into consideration. The effects of the limited water depth and width upon the flow phenomena are then introduced.
Different methods ”’used to calculate the ship resistance and squat in confined waterways are pre¬sented -in chapter 2. The range of applicability of some methods used to predict the squat is illustrated. The manoeuvring characteristics of the ship in the confined waterway are presented in this chapter. The effect of the waterway dimensions upon the hydro¬dynamic derivatives and the control of the ship are discussed, in addition to the effect of meeting and passing of two ships.
