Abstract

This thesis represent a pharmacognostical study of certain common plants growing wild in Egypt, in order to isolate and characterise their most important biological— ly active constituents. Moreover, to investigate, if possible, their physiological properties.
PART I : Comprises the phytochemical investigation of five Astragalus species. belonging to the family Fabaceae, Viz., 1— A. boeticus L., 2— A. tomentosus Lam.,
3-A. peregrinus Vahi., 4—A. hamosus var. brachyceras Led— eb. 5— A. hamosus var. buceras Rouy.
Phese plants are reported mainly to have anticarcinogenic properties.
PART II : is a continuation of the phytochemical study of Ajuga iva CL.) schreb,a plant found by the author to cause severe derangement in the metamorphosis of cotton — leaf worm. In addition the macro- and micromorphological study of the plant is also carried out.
PART I : The objective of the work in this part is to investigate the saponin contents of five members of the genus Astragalus growing in Egypt for the following reasons :
1— The recent discovery of saponin glycosides in the genus Astragalus, that can be used as chemotaxonomical markers of the genus.
2- The claimed use of some Astragalus species mainly in the Chinese folklore medicine as antitumor and anticancer remedies.
