Abstract The present work attempts to design a plan to expand the Egyptianmercantile fleet. The adoption of”the open door policy,” the growth in per capita income of the average Egyptian citizen and the population growth have led to an unprecedented growth in foreign trade. The existing commercial fleet is incapable of playing an effective role in carrying such responsibility let alone shouldering the future needs of the ever expanding trade. Beside the political and social benifits of having an up to date commercial fleet, the economic value of such fleet could not be ignored. It is hypothesized that, should the fleet be expanded according to the outline proposed in this study, the fleet could finance itself as well as have a handsome return badly needed for economic growth. By its very nature, the study is both technical and economic. The technical side of the study involves the following: 1) The unsatisfactory state of affairs of the existing fleet. 2) The optimum type, size. and speed of the ships seeded to fill in the gap between the present and the regained fleet. 3) The modern technological advances which can be adopted to improve the operational economy of the future fleet. |
