Abstract The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effect of partial lining on drain discharge. Dischar¬ge equations for a system of three and five partially ” lined mole drains, are established and another equations are deduced for both systems of three and five ordinary mole drains. A digital computer is used in solving equa¬tions and in obtaining numerical values necessary for plo¬tting a number of curves A series of experiments are carried out ”to compare discharges of partially lined mole drains to those of ordi¬nary mole drains • An actual flow pattern is photographed for a partia¬lly lined mole drain and for the same case flow lines are plotted according to theory • Effects of spacing, L • drain diameter • d • piezo¬metric head, ho, height of water above drain centre mid¬way between two successive drains,H , and thickness of clay layer below drain centre , D , on drain discharge are investigated both mathematically and experimentally. The -ratio of discharge of a partially lined mole drain to that of an ordinary mole drain is presented and the results are put in atabulated form. |
