Abstract

This thesis concerns structural nalysis as applied majnly to tall building frames. The need for more accurate analysis of tall buildings is timulated by the continued trend to build slender structures of reduced mass, the s~ety and. stability of which depend on a high degree of continuity of j ointa, and this results in highly statically indeter-minate forms. There is no point at which a building can be considered as a tall, and the term is usually gi. ven to one the design of which is ~fected more by lateral than by graTity forces. In add! tion, tall buildings, IIOre than low buildings. can
be affected by instabiJ3,ty forces in their broad form. Also, in the design of skeletal structures 1Dcreasing attention is being placed on ltiJIIs:te load analysis because of the economies which generally accompany this more logi¬cal approach. From the previous work it can be seen that structural analysis is based either on methods which attempt to formu¬late and solve a problem in an explicit form, or on DUaen¬ca! methods which proTide a solution to a specific problem.
