Abstract Fluorine compounds are being consumed nowadays at projected rates such that all currently known fluorine resources in the fluorspar deposits of the world are expected to be depleted before the end of the century. In that event the world’s fluorine supply will have to be deprived from new fluorine supply will have to be deprived from new fluorspar deposits.Rock phosphate is the only important alternative source of fluprine. It has been estimated that fluorine resources in phosphate rock are adequate to satisfy world demand well into the next century since its supplies are almost inexhaustible. It would not be an economic proposition to use this rock just for the production of fluorine compounds beacause of its low fluorine content5%;therefore all processes so far put forward have concentrated on recovering the fluorine as a by product from fertilizer manufacture where these fluorine gases are regarded as unavoidable nuisance air pollutants. |
