Abstract In this study a theoretical model was made for exhaust system of internal combustion engine. A computer program was designed to solve this model. The system, for this model, was represented by unsteady flow in a pipe with two boundary conditions. The first, is cylinder boundary condition and the second is surge tank boundary condition.. The cylinder and tank pressures were computed instantaneously by thermo¬dynamic analysis. The behaviour of gases in the pipe was developed from theory of gas dynamics. The governing equa¬tions of the system were solved numerically with the method of characteristics. A strain gauge pressure transeducer was used to measure r_’;I the time varying exhaust gases pressure in the exhaust pipe and surge tank in case of motored engine, however for firing U engine the results obtained were unsatisfactory. A comparison between the theoritical and experimt;.utal resulLs was made, and the mathematical mcdel gives reasonable agreement with the theoretical model. The exhaust gases properties were studied along the exhaust Di-De and surge tank. The effects of engine load and speed on the exhaust gases behaviour were predicted using Z’--e computer program of the theoretical model. |
