Abstract
Throughout this thesis, the problem of ship frictional resistance has been investigated, with particular emphasis on the extrapolation of towing tank results to higher values of Reynolds number. Hughes I experimental rGsults have been analysed. This has led to a simple and direct proposed method of extrapolation as well as a corresponding friction line, taking into consideration the edge effect on plane surface results.
A brief reVlew of preVlOUS work on the subject is pre¬sented. The effect of roughness on the resistance coeffi¬cients is studied and a series of charts for roughness allO\0’7¬ance as applied to ships are given. With respect to form effect, the differences between plane• surfaces and ship
forms are summarized and then the various methods of taking this form effect into consideration are discussed. The nature of the flow around the plane surfaces used In measur¬ing the frictional resistance is studied in order to arrlve at a new method for turbulence stimulation.
Finally, three different hull forms are chosen to examine the validity of the proposed extrapolation method. The proposed method is in reasonable agreement with the 1957 ITTC line.
