Abstract

The use of internally-finned tubes in the cooler and
heater design of Stirling engines is investigated in this
thesis A brief description of Stirling engines and their
types and applications are summarized showing their
advantages and disadvantages .
A number of different commercial tubes and another tube
designed and manufactured by the author were tested to
determine their heat transfer and fanning friction
characteristics . One of the commercial tubes was chosen to
be used in the design of the cooler and heater of a 140 kw
Gamma Stirling engine after the correlations describing its
characteristics had been found. It was found that one of
such tube can replace 40 plain tubes having 4 mm. inside
diameter for the same dead volume, the same pressure drop
and the same heat transfer .
The theoretical work was undertaken to analyze the engine
cycle assuming two ideal cases, namely, the isothermal
analysis and the adiabatic analysis. The second order
analysis was also applied to the case study engine to get
more realistic results and for the optimization of the
dimensions and working conditions
The fmal proposed design of the engine is also given and
recommendations for future work are suggested
