Abstract

!!his work deals with the structure and properties of the Arachne (Maliwatt) nonwoven fabrics with special emphasis on the main factors affecting these properties and. comparing these properties with those of the conveneional woven fabrics. The factors v/hich were thought to be of importance to affect the properties of the produced fabrics are I stitch density, stitching warp tension, web weight, fibre web raw material and stitch type. he fibre web raw material used are viscose rayon, cotton and flax, and the stitch t,ypes are one bar plain stitch and. two bars plain and chain stitches; these give us four different types of fabrics. The other three factors which are, stitch density ,stitching warp tension and web weight and their interactions were studied statistically in factorial design experiments for each of the four different fabric types produced. The significant effects of the main three factors and their interactions on the different tested fabric properties, have been determined by plotting the results of the b-values on the arithmetic propability half normal paper. The fabric properties investigated were : fabrio density, yarn consumption and loop length, fabric tenacity, extension and the anisotropy of each, fabric bur~ting st~ength, bending resistance, crease recovery, air permeability, abrasion resistance and peroent shrinkage after waShing. It has been found that the number of courses per unit length and the web weight have prono1...Ulced effect on most of the fabric prop erties t but the warp tension did not affeot any of the fabric properties. The effect of stitch ~pe has been ~tudied and it has been found that the fabric type two bar plain and chain stitches has better results on the fabric properties. The influence 0+ the web ,fibre raw material on the fabric properties is studied and the results indicate a ma:r:ked relationship between the type of raw material used in the web and fabric properties •A comparison between the investigated properties of the Arachne nonwoven fabrics and those of the conventional woven fabrics with about the same weight and material has been made and the results are discussed in terms of the different structures. An imperical equation has been made to calculate the stitch loop length in both plain and ohain stitches and
