Abstract

This thesis overviews the various theoretical methods used to analyze verticalle piles and pile groups subjected to axial and lateral loads. Applications of of these methods are produced to outline the linear and nonlinear responses single piles and pile groups under axial and lateral loads. Comparisons are between the obtained results by the various approaches and results fined by others for single piles and pile groups. Different soil profiles are used the analyses to examine the reliability of these approaches in general soil nditionsThe effect of pile cap stiffness on the response of axially loaded pile groups is studied. Circular, square, and rectangular group configurations are considered in analysis. The variation of load distribution among piles when the caps is subjected to concentric or uniform load is illustrated. An elastic approach for the analysis of piles having non-circular cross sections is introduced. The analysis is made for number of piles of different rectangularity ratios and different pile length to width ratios to illustrate the influence of these ratios on the pile behavior.
The performance of dissimilar piles when arranged in groups is also studied under the axial and the lateral loads. Dissimilarity between axially loaded piles included difference in pile length, pile diameter, pile stiffness, and pile base diameters. For laterally loaded piles, sources of dissimilarity included piles of different diameter, stiffness, and pile head boundary condition.
