Abstract

The rapid developments in hardware as well as software tools have stimulated
the development of computer-aided ship design programs. The earlier programs were usually concerned with the determination of the principal dimensions and illustrating the results that obtained in a tabulated format without due regard to the graphical representation of the proposed designs. However, with the availability of powerful PC’s in the eighties as well as, the nineties, new areas were explored by the ready made packages that provide a higher degree of accuracy, an efficient database management system (storage as well as manipulation), and graphical support. Accordingly, the rapid hunting in the computer technology corroborated the development of the present CAD subsystem for the preliminary design of full container ships.
The major characteristics for container ships are briefly illustrated with particular emphasis on the evolutionary developments that have occurred for the cellular type container ship. The limits set on the maximum number of containers to be enveloped within the ship’s hull are briefly mentioned. A survey of i.ie traditional design approaches suggested for this particular ship type is given with particular emphasis on the use of computers in speeding up and extending the scope of computations in addition to improving the accuracy of the calculations involved.
