Abstract

This thesis study is intended to collect sub – surface geotechnical data of Educational Buildings constructed during the last 15 years in Alexandria Governorate. These data are allocated on a data base where it is easy to be accessed and recovered for future usage.
The collected data are further processed statistically after which could be combined with new raw materials test results recovered through future field and laboratory investigation programs. It is shown that such combination of data shall improve the confidence level and shall provide better estimate for design parameters.
The thesis is structured into two main parts; Building the Data Base and Construction of the Geotechnical Map. These two parts are presented by the following chapters:
Chapter 1: Briefs the introduction to the study
Chapter 2: Presents literatures review for the data bases
Chapter 3: Shows the structure of the data base which is presented through a step by step navigator
Chapter 4: Highlights Construction of Geotechnical Map of Alexandria Governorate. The Map is based on data collected and allocated within field and laboratory investigation programs by General Authority of Educational Buildings ”GAEB” – Alexandria Branch.
Chapter 5: Develops statistical models for raw data recovered by the investigation program. Test data such as Standard Penetration, Unconfined Compression and Rock Quality Designation are fitted to the various statistical models. These models could be combined with future field and laboratory results to estimate the expected results with the required degree of confidence.
Chapter 6: Briefs thesis’s main conclusions and recommendations for future research works.
Chapter 7: Lists thesis’s references.
The presented data base allows, through easy navigation, accessibility to data and information pertaining to the building under construction, in particular geotechnical data. Geotechnical data include, but not limiting to the following;
• Bore Hole Logs; depth, location and details
• Field test results
• Laboratory test results
• Foundation type
• Depth of foundation
• Allowable bearing capacity and or pile working load
• Difficulties and problems associated with construction phase
Geological profiles of the subsurface soil are generated and detailed for the Alexandria Governorate five major sectors.
Geotechnical data are statistically classified where mean and standard deviation values are evaluated according to which layers are described in view of their consistency and relative density. Developed statistical models for soil strength parameters facilitate their use with raw materials recovered from future site investigation programs in order to upgrade the level of confidence in design parameters estimated values.
