Abstract Aim of the work: This work aims at studying the arterial system of lower limbs in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus to verify the presence of early atherosclerotic lesions. Conclusions: The present study showed that there is significant increase in the intimal thickness in the previously mentioned vessels in the diabetic patients when compared with the control group. Also, these intimal changes were correlated with fasting and post-prandial glucose levels. On the other hand, it was found that the waveform velocity was normal in the anterior and posterior tibial arteries in all patients. So, it is concluded that diabetes can induce early atherosclerotic changes in the form of increase in the intimal thickness in the common and superficial femoral arteries even before it’s clinical and laboratory diagnosis. These changes are related to the degree of hyperglycemia at the time of diagnosis. |
