Abstract

As Injuries of the brachial plexus secondary to a difficult labor are still a problem in terms of clinical treatment Microsurgical nerve repair has demonstrated to provide improved outcomes compared to conservative treatment, while advancements in secondary reconstruction have offered significant improvements in the performance of activities of daily living for older children. So we evaluate the role of secondary procedures to improve the function of the upper limb, and to decrease the deformities occurred as sequelae of late OBBP.
Patients and Methods:
111 patients were included in our study; female patients were slightly more common. Right sided was more common than left side. Our patients were divided according to the types of operations into 3 main groups: Group I: Operated cases for shoulder deformities. Group II: Operated cases for Elbow deformities. Group III: Operated cases for wrist and hand deformities.
Results:
Secondary reconstructive procedures for contracture release and tendon transfers have improved function and enhanced the activities of daily living in most of patients who present late or who fail to recover following primary reconstruction. Recommendations:
The microsurgical interpretation with free flap and tendon transfer will help many children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy for not being hand caped and permanently in need to social help.
