Abstract

The present study was executed during two successive seasons of 2007 / 2008 in the Nursery and Laboratory of Faculty of Agriculture, Minia University. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of vegetative growth, yield components and chemical composition of guar plants to four planting dates (1st March, 15th March, 30th March and 15th April) and fertilization treatments i.e. control, E.M., phosphorein, E.M. + phosphorein, E.M. + phosphorein + 50 % NPK, E.M. phosphorein + 75 % NPK and mineral NPK (100 %), as well as, the interaction between them.
The obtained results could be summarized as follows :
1- Effect of planting dates :
A- Vegetative growth traits :
• The significantly highest values of plant height, stem diameter, number of branches / plant and shoot fresh and dry weights / plant resulted from sowing the plants on last March, comparing with other planting dates.
B- Yield and yield components :
• The effect of planting dates on yield and its components was significant in the two growing seasons. The highest values were resulted from planting (30th March).
C- Chemical constituents :
• Guaran %, Guaran yield / plant and / fed. significantly increased due to planting date of last March comparing with other tested planting dates in most cases, in the two seasons.
• The highest values of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids contents in the fresh leaves, as well as, N, P and K in the dry leaves significantly resulted from the plants dated on March 30, while the least values resulted from the planting on 1st March, in the two seasons.
2- Effect of fertilization :
A- Vegetative growth traits :
• All vegetative growth traits of guar plants, namely, plant height, stem diameter, number of branches / plant and shoot fresh and dry weights / plant were significantly increased by all tested fertilization treatments compared with control treatment. The highest values were obtained due to fertilize guar plants with mineral NPK (100 %) followed by biofertilizers + 75 % NPK in the two seasons. ’
B- Yield and yield components :
• All fertilization treatments (biofertilizers and / or mineral NPK) significantly increased pod number / plant, seed number / 5 pods, weight of 100 seed, seed yield / plant, per plot and per feddan in comparison with control in the two seasons.
• The treatment of mineral NPK (100 %) followed by biofertilizers + 75 % NPK were the best fertilization treatments which produced the highest yield and its components in comparison with other tested fertilization treatments including control treatment.
C- Chemical constituents :
• Sex tested fertilization treatments significantly increased for guaran % and guaran yield / plant and / fed. in comparison with that of control treatment. The best results for guaran % in the seeds were obtained due to biofertilizers + 75% NPK followed by mineral NPK (100 %) then biofertilizers + 50 % NPK. However, the best results for guaran yield were obtained due to mineral NPK (100 %) followed by biofertilizers + 75 % NPK in the two growing seasons.
• The significantly highest values of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids contents in fresh leaves, as well as, K % in the dry leaves of guar plants resulted from the treatment of mineral NPK (100 %) followed by biofertilizers + 75 % NPK in the two growing seasons. While the highest N and P % were obtained due biofertilizers plus 75 % NPK followed by mineral NPK.
3- Effect of interaction :
A- Vegetative growth :
• The interaction between planting dates and fertilization treatments was significant in increasing vegetative growth characters. sowing plants on March 30 in combination with mineral NPK (full dose) or biofertilizers + 75 % NPK, resulted in the best vegetative growth characters.
B- Yield and yield components :
• Yield components parameters, namely, number of pods / plant, number of seeds / 5 pods, weight of 100 seed and seeds yield / plant / plot and / fed., were augmented by the adding biofertilizers and / or mineral NPK fertilization treatments. The best interaction treatments were mineral NPK (full dose) followed by biofertilizers + 75 % NPK.
C- Chemical constituents :
• Cultivated guar plants on March 30 in combination with biofertilizers+75% NPK led to enhancement of guaran% in the seeds
• Cultivated guar plants on March 30 in combination with mineral NPK (full dose) led to increase seed yield / plant and / fed.
• The planting date of March 30 in combination with mineral NPK (full dose) led to enhancement of the three photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids).
• The planting date of March 30 in combination with biofertilizers plus 75 % NPK led to increase of N and P %, while the highest values of K % were obtained due to cultivate plants on March 30 in combination with mineral NPK (full dose).
