Abstract

Approaching the city represents a daily fundamental experience to a huge number of city center users, new comers and daily commuters as well. The apparent need to institute a physical and symbolic access system between the city center and surrounding residential satellites or suburban areas are basically the subject of the research.
Scope of the Research
The scope of this research as it concerned with the city approach relates to this following areas of study: - The studying of the entrance sequence to the city. over land, through air, and across water.
- The development and improvement of the access system within the city or within the region in which the city is Playing a leading part. The analyzing of traffic, parking, public transportation, and pedestrians requirements are essential in this case.
Approaches to centers of major cities are usually old spaces combined with the old fabric of the city, and has high aesthetic values in addition to its symbolic and historical values. The tendency to develop this places with a sensitive way to keep their high quality spaces and architecture as it is a part of the city identity and character are also important to the research.
There is a more general need for a better husbanding of the existing assets and resources. Acres of waste land, railway yards, stores and ware houses which no longer serve their original use around city center approaches represent the key to solve a lot of urban problems.
The Aim of the research
The primary aim of the research is to outline the required values for developing and managing the city approaching process. The thesis also aims at providing the principles and considerations for the design and implementation of access modes in the city center.
In more detail level the phased purpose of this research is to
Investigate on the city approaching experience in the past, present and imaginative future time.
Identify a functional and physical concept to provide clarity, identitv, and ease of movement to the access system of the city at least at a theoretical reality.
Explore the case of the city of Alexandria, using the previous concept to demonstrate a practical application in the city physical conditions illustrating that theoretical criteria more than achieving final decisions.
