Abstract Aim of the work To study crystals in synovial fluid of osteoarthritic knee joint effusion and to correlate its presence with severity of the disease. Conclusion Calcium crystals CPPD crystals or calcium compound particles rather than CPPD crystals detected by alizarin red stain are frequently present on OA knee joint effusion. In patients with OA the mixture of calcium crystals (CPPD or other calcium crystals) are as common as the presence of either crystal species on its own. osteoarthritic knee joint with synovial fluid containing CPPD crystals showed no greater degree of radiographic degeneration than did joints with fluid containing on crystal at all, while joints with fluids containing calcium compound particles rather than CPPD crystals detected by alizarin red stain showed greater degree of radiographic degeneration. Patients with alizarin red positive appear to associate mainly with devolutionary joint changes and their knee pain is more severe, while patients with CPPD crystals in joint fluid have larger amount of joint. Patients with intra-articular calcification were more likely to have various deformities and undergo previous intra-articular steroid injection. |
