Abstract

Aim of the work
To study the relationship between the presence of mitral regurgitation and prevalence of various types of arrhythmia in patients with mitral valve prolapse with correlation to signal-averaged electrocardiography.
Conclusion
1- We conclude that prevalence of arrhythmia in patients with mitral valve prolapse and mitral regurgitation are more prevalent than in those with pure mitral valve prolapse.
2- Presence of late potentials in patients with mitral valve prolapse indicates a higher tendency of arrhythmia.
Recommendations
1- All patients diagnosed as mitral valve prolapse must be evaluated by Color Doppler to detect presence or absence and severity of mitral regurgitation.
2- Holter monitoring for 24 hours must be done as routine investigation for every patients with mitral valve prolapse to detect presence or absence of arrhythmias.
3- Signal-averaged electrocardiogram is a useful tool to investigate patients with mitral valve prolapse. As presence of late potentials means higher tendency to arrhythmia.
